Let’s Play A Guessing Game: Who’s this Engineer?
Posted on December 19, 2011 | No CommentsHere at engineering-matters, we’ve taken on some serious topics. And rightfully so. There’s a lot going on with the engineering profession. But as we approach the holiday season, I feel... -
Engineering a Good Cause
Posted on May 10, 2011 | No CommentsWhen it comes to sites that talk about the reality of engineering on the web, well, there’s not exactly an overwhelming number of them. So when I came across the... -
You Can Make Anything Out of Legos… Including the Antikythera Mechanism
Posted on January 14, 2011 | No CommentsLooks like legos aren't just for engineers who can't keep their work at the office. In this case, these people used legos to recreate an ancient time keeping device called the Antikythera Mechanism. Check out the videos below. -

You Can Make Anything Out of Legos… Including Printers
Posted on December 3, 2010 | No CommentsThe more I find, the more I'm surprised. Looks like people are using legos to recreate just about anything and everything. In this case, someone actually made a working printer out of legos. Of course they incorporated some electrics and a felt-tip pen. -
You Can Make Anything Out of Legos… Including Transmissions
Posted on November 5, 2010 | No CommentsA few weeks ago, I posted about a youtube video showing a working sniper rifle made of legos. Well, turns out more engineering oriented folks are using legos to make other mechanical things. This time, over on the Gadgeteer column on Design News, I saw where someone had create an automatic transmission out of legos. -
Inspiration from the Engineers behind NASA’s Mars Lander
Posted on October 8, 2010 | No CommentsA couple weeks ago, I published a post with some inspirational words from Herbert Hoover. This time around, I want to share something that's a little more recent: some insight into the development work on the Mars Exploration Rover. When I first graduated I went into a job where I supported several NASA projects across the nation including the X-35 at Johnson Space Center (JSC) in Houston and some stuff here and there at the Jet Propulsion Labratory (JPL). I'll always hold the work NASA does in high regard. -
End Your Week with a Laugh: “This Week in Engineering #32″ over at Youtube
Posted on October 1, 2010 | No CommentsWell, this puts it to rest. There are not only engineers who are funny, but they actually mean to be funny. It's no accident. All kidding aside, Todd Sierer is an Austin local who works for National Instruments. However, he also works on this series with Vince Penman for engineering.com. You can check out the full series on their youtube channel. -
Herbert Hoover on the Engineering Profession
Posted on September 24, 2010 | 2 CommentsTo the engineer falls the job of clothing the bare bones of science with life, comfort, and hope. No doubt as years go by people forget which engineer did it, even if they ever knew. Or some politician puts his name on it. Or they credit it to some promoter who used other people’s money with which to finance it. But the engineer himself looks back at the unending stream of goodness which flows from his successes with satisfactions that few professions may know. -
You Can Make Anything Out of Legos… Including Sniper Rifles
Posted on September 3, 2010 | No CommentsCan you remember what got you interested in engineering? For me, I think it was playing with legos as a kid. Building cars, planes and all sorts of other crazy things out of those blocks was a ton of fun. It really got my mind working on mechanical aspects of things, even if I didn’t know it at the time. I think for a my generation of engineers, there was probably a similar story. Well, turns out, some folks are still at it. Quite heartily I might add. I came across the following youtube video where someone actually built a working sniper rifle… out of lego-like blocks.
